Grayson Shade Walker was recently named as the Edward J. Henning Memorial Award recipient for Emory University School of Law. The Atlanta Bar Association Dispute Resolution Section sponsors the Edward J. Henning Memorial Award, a cash award given in memory of Ed Henning, one of the “founding fathers” of mediation in Georgia.
Thoughts on Mediation
We asked Grayson for his thoughts on mediation, and he said:
“I think mediation is relevant to all parts of life. Mediation can play a crucial role in a dispute between two neighbors who don’t see eye to eye, but it can also play a crucial role in a dispute between two neighboring countries that don’t see eye to eye. Mediation helps to bring together the unique personal and cultural backgrounds of disputant parties and to reach an outcome that respects the integrity of both parties by meeting somewhere in the middle. Figuring out that middle can be tough and requires a lot of background knowledge and on-your-feet thinking, but it’s a rewarding process indispensable to promoting win-win cooperation and reaching a mutual understanding between parties. To mediate is to find the common nexus that makes us human, while still taking into account what’s different between us. I think mediation is as important in law as it is in life.”
All about Grayson Walker
Grayson received an Honors Bachelor of Arts in a Philosophy, Politics, and Economics program and in Philosophy at Xavier University. There, he received the Archbishop McNicholas Philosophy Award and the Winter-Cohen Brueggeman Fellowship, which funded a field research trip to Nepal where he studied the impact of China’s One Belt, One Road Initiative on indigenous land tenure in the Terai and Himalaya regions. In Fall 2021, Grayson enrolled as a first-generation law student at Emory University School of Law, where he focused on international law and dispute resolution. At Emory, he became a staff member and later an Executive Board member of the Emory International Law Review, where he has an article published in the Volume 38 edition and was responsible for planning the Volume 38 Symposium on Disputed Territories. In Fall 2023, Grayson studied international law and business at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, China. This was a life changing experience that broadened the scope of his interest in mediation across cultural and political lines. International dispute resolution remains Grayson’s chief interest, which has been highlighted in his coursework, in two academic trips he took to Israel and to the West Bank, in separate trips to China and The Hague, and in other experiences abroad. His immediate plans are currently to work at a real estate law firm, but he ultimately plans to work at the UN or in the ADR department of an international law firm.
